Mersey Tunnels Head Office: Georges Dock Building Liverpool L3 1DD
0151-236 8602
For visitors new to Liverpool, there are two different Mersey Tunnels.
The first and oldest tunnel is the Birkenhead tunnel built back in 1933 and was the largest underwater tunnel at that time. This road tunnel links Liverpool directly into the heart of Birkenhead, the main town on the other side of the Mersey river.
The second road tunnel was completed in 1971 - and this time - the Wallasey tunnel links Liverpool with Wallasey, Birkenhead and the M53 Motorway on the Wirral side.
Both road tunnels have toll charges on the Wirral side - the current cost for a private car is £1.20 GBP.
